Friday Night

On Friday nights at Le Cotonnier, a small outdoor club at the edge of Bereba, young and old gather to dance all night under the stars on a cracked concrete slab. A noisy gas generator powers an old CD player that blasts West African pop music through a pair of blown out speakers. The pounding beat is as relentless as the heat. I mingle with the revelers, photographing as we dance together. My flash is the only light that penetrates the darkness to capture the celebration of life and affirmation of joy and community in Bereba.
